My Lights

This is where I take the pictures for my Jewelry. What you see here are two Alien Bees B-1600's, my tripod and the light tent. I use several other strobes depending on the type of subject I'm photographing.

The lamp

Playing around with balancing existing room light and flash, also added a little bit of post processing.

My friend Dan.

Carol

Trying some portraits with only one flash and ambient light. Strobist: SB-800 in remote TTL mode bounced off the sealing and a floor lamp for the hair light.

Evening light.

Just looked out the dining room window and saw the clouds turn bright red, unfortunately I was not able to capture it's beauty as I saw it. I had no tripod and had therefore hold the camera by hand.

My mug.

I bought this mug many years ago, I don't remember where. Was playing with my strobes and I thought it would make a good model.

What are you looking at?

Froggling it today, short of willing participants in my "A Picture a Day" project, this little things made a great substitute.

Fragile?

Pixel was sitting in this box as I walked in the door this evening. What can you do other then take a few shots?
Nikon SB-800 pointed at the sealing at 1/2 power.

Handengraving

I'm was working on engraving a baby cup and I thought that this might make a good picture. The little black thing I'm holding with my left index finger is the remote camera trigger, well I had to do it somehow short of stepping on it :)

Lighting info: I put the engravers vice in to my light tent and I used one softbox with one AB B-1600 from above.

Popcorn and a movie

The gang is watching a movie :)

Watching the shoot.

Here is pixel, our Maine Coon cat, she was watching me take pictures of her brother Ozzy.
Strobist: One manual SB-800 with diffusion dome and a SB-26, as you can see, the later did not contribute to the exposure.

Solitude

This picture was actually taken last Monday and since current events have not allowed me to shoot a picture for today, I am take the liberty to post this one. This picture was taken with my Nikon D70 and one SB-800 in manual mode.

Playtime

Oz is playing with his famous toy. I tried to catch him jumping, but it was not to be, maybe next time.

Quiet evening at home.

My wife and I having a good laugh while posing for the camera . What better is there to do on a cold winter night?
One Nikon SB's with reflector, on each side of the camera at 1/4 power, bounced off the sealing. Nikon D70 60mm f5.6 1/250

Good old times

This is my good old F4, she has been a great camera until I went digital, now I rarely use it anymore. Holding it in my hands, it still feels better then any digital I have. I took this picture with my Nikon D70 and 60mm Nikkor Micro.
Strobist: AB-1600 in light box from above, one SB-800 through umbrella to camera left and one SB-26 to camera right. In the final image I used two shots.
1) all lights without color filter.
2) I covered the SB-26 with a red filter.
After all of that, I combined the two shots in Corel Photo-Paint and masked all but the red high lights off the image taken with the red filter.

Got run over by a snowplow

It's snowing very heavy today, turns out to be one of this kick back and relax day's. I don't have much to add on the lighting here, everything is regular daylight, but the image was post processed and on purpose over sharpened.

Jester

This was rather tricky to shoot for a newbie like I, the Jesters clothes, beads and hat where made from a very reflective material. So after consulting with the "Light Science & Magic" book, I did the following.
Strobist: One Nikon SB-800 80mm 1/16 power, slightly to the left of the camera. One Nikon SB-26 80mm at 1/32 power, behind of the jester. One white reflector to the right of the camera.

Still life

Just a quick attempt at a still life for today.

A sad day!

I wish I could have taken this picture on her wedding day! She will always be in my heart.

Ozzy the model.

This Maine Coon cat is the best model I have ever had, as soon as I take my camera out of the bag he starts to pose, no toy's needed to get him excited. His name is Ozzy, actually his papers say "Wizard of Oz" and he is the king of the house. I used a setup which was described in one of the Strobist blog articles.
Strobist: One SB-800 in one corner of the room and one SB-26 in the corner diagonal to the other, both were bounced of the seeling at 1/2 power. I'm amazed how well this setup lights a room, the basket Oz is sitting in is actually beside a large recliner and I did expect to get some shadows from it.

Our Cat Called Pixel

This is our cat and simply because she was extremely tiny when we got here, we called her pixel. Unfortunately she has only one eye and it is very hard to catch her on her good side of the face. I used one SB-800 with diffuser to the cameras right side, but I could not keep her nose from burning out. I'll take any suggestions!

Time is running

I always wanted to do a picture where one can see the movement of the watch hands. Well, it's not perfect but I think I got the general idea, it actually took me some time to figure out how to freeze the hand and still show movement. What I did was, I used a SB-800 in RPT mode and flashed 20 flashes at 5 hz and 1/128 power into a reflector above the watch, Camera is Nikon D70, f5.6 at 4sec. The image was edited in Corel Photo-Paint.

What's that?

I never thought that posting one picture a day was this difficult, I'm running out of ideas. Well I could always post one of the product shots I do during the day at work, but that was not the intention of this blog. So my wife and I were just sitting in our living room and making funny faces, it is amazing, I might not have produced a flawless and perfect photo, but I assure you we had a great evening and almost died laughing. I used one strobe on each side of the camera and bounced them of the ceiling.

Relaxing

My Wife and Oz the cat , as in wizard of Oz, are relaxing on the rocking chair.
This photo was taken with one SB-800 in manual mode at 1/4 power and bounced off the ceiling. Camera is Nikon D70 60mm macro Nikkor at 1/125 f- 5.6.

Fly Fishing Rod Reel Seat

This is a reels seat for a fly fishing rod. I recently hand engraved the metal parts and naturally I photographed the piece for all of you to see. To light the reel seat I used two AB B1600 strobes with soft boxes on each side of the camera.

Skiing models

This two willing subjects volunteered to model for me and help in my quest to better light scenes with off camera flashes. I used a Nikon SB-800 with diffusion dome to the cameras left and a white sheet of paper to the cameras right. Unfortunately I'm still waiting for a pair of radio triggers to use with the strobes and until they arrive I have no way of using more then one strobe.

Colored Gemstones

This image is more in line with the photography I normally do. The stones are, from left to right, Citrine, Tanzanite with Diamonds and Maine Tourmaline.
For the viewers who are interested in the setup, well here it is. I used my good old trusty Nikon D70, one AB1600 strobe with soft box on each side of the camera and for the highlights I used one Nikon SB26 flash with snoot attachment.

Unruly bunch

Just got a new SB-800 flash and had all kind of trouble trying to figure out how to use it off camera and with multiple flashes. So the guy's here got a bit unruly, but I did manage to shoot a few images.

My Wife shoveling snow

The snow keeps just coming down and it feels like it might snow forever. While I had important things to attend to, like editing images, my wife was making an honest attempt to keep the driveway clean.

Jeep in snow storm

Snow, snow and more snow! Today is just the right day to figure out how all this blogging works :) This image was taken with my Nikon D70 and a handheld SB-26 flash to the camera left

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all! Not much going on here in my part of the world, we are having the third snow storm this week, with one word it feels like it's been snowing 24/7.

Here is my first image of my attempt to shoot at least one image per day for the next year. The image is of a Memorial Park in Maine USA shot with my D70 and a SB26 flash at 1/2 power to the camera left.
See my other pictures here.
